““It’s not about the world of design, it’s about the design of the world.””
naomi (she/they)
Naomi is a radical change maker who is committed to being a catalyst for intersectional social impact. They are an abolitionist, designer, strategist, and researcher who is a container for transformation that facilitates hard conversations to bring people together. They identify as Queer-Latinx-nonbianry-femme and are originally from Gary, Indiana. They hold a MA in Social Innovation from Grand Valley State University, and a BFA in Graphic Design and Photography; both located in Michigan. Currently, they are working for Mockingbird Analytics & Incubator, an Anti-Oppressive/Pro-Liberation social enterprise headquartered in Los Angeles, CA that supports emerging nonprofits and grassroots organizers through capacity building, coaching, and fiscal sponsorship nationally.
Prior to relocating to Los Angeles, Naomi worked as the Communications Strategist and Public Safety Community Builder for Urban Core Collective in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In their role as Public Safety Community Builder, they regularly collaborated with the ACLU of Michigan, and local chapters of the NAACP and Urban League. Through this work Naomi co-designed the Community Owns Safety Coalition; a grassroots community coalition that activates residents to redefine public safety through intersectional collaboration, mutual aid and organizing for direct action.
Their MA thesis is a social and emotional subjective framework that bridges the concepts of design thinking, lived experiences, and intersectional feminism with community care. The framework is intended for community organizers and facilitators for equity-based solutions. They were awarded the Joel J. Orosz Fellowship at the Johnson Center for Philanthropy, where they were a co-researcher for the Effective Board Development Ecosystem Project. Naomi relocated to Los Angeles to work on projects that can be described as “an inch-wide, and a mile-deep”, (adrienne maree brown, Emergent Strategy).
Naomi currently lives in Los Angeles, California with her son and their dog. She enjoys hiking, reading (bell hooks), and recently started a new painting series called “The Impression of Memory.”
