““It’s not about the world of design, it’s about the design of the world.””
naomi (she/they)
Naomi is a Change Agent, Designer, Researcher & Storyteller. She holds a Professional Master of Art in Social Innovation (Sociology) from Grand Valley State University and a Bachelor’s degree of Fine Art in Graphic Design from Kendall College of Art and Design.
She spent most of their career as a visual/creative graphic designer — those roles included working at agencies, in-house marketing/communications, and more recently as a freelance graphic designer and creative director. During their tenure as a designer, she began to volunteer on several nonprofit boards, mostly in DEI or community director roles. Those roles also included leadership development, planning community events, and facilitating design thinking sessions which led to a passion in advocacy and community based research.
While pursuing their master’s in social innovation—Naomi held roles as a graduate assistant doing admin support for the program, research, as well as being a teaching assistant. She also had a fellowship at the Johnson Center for Philanthropy where they contributed to research on the philanthropic sector. During that time, she also began working for the Urban Core Collective where she contributed to advocacy projects such as voting rights and get out the vote campaigns. They also collaborated with community partners to strategize for the Community Owns Safety Coalition and the Reinvest in Grand Rapids campaign.
Naomi currently lives in Los Angeles, California with her 13 year old son and their dog. She enjoys hiking, reading (her favorite author is bell hooks), and she is getting back into making art.
